Passions, fanboyisms, the things you like to gush about

I’m currently reading two books, which I switch about like a madman with no sense of direction. One is a casually narrated novel by Robin Sloan, Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. The other is a popular scientific volume about high-end physics by Roger Penrose, titled The Large, the Small, and the Human Mind. They’re both very different books, as different as, oh I don’t know. A watermelon and the moon, I guess. But the similarity is almost hilarious.

The two books, I’m only like a quarter of the way there for both, but as I go I keep reading them as fan letters to the things the author really likes to talk about. Sloan likes to talk about tech, all the million uses of Google, how Ruby is an awesome programming language. Penrose can’t stop gushing about how magnificent quantum mechanics is, how great the exactness of mathematics, and why this hypothesis of the beginning of the universe is his favourite.

It’s like reading a fanboy gushing about their favourite artist. Help.
